What Junk Removal Costs, Item by Item
On one real job we put out to bid, 12 local pros priced the same pile from the same photos — and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest quote was $1,025. Knowing the number before you call is the whole difference.
What one item costs
Each figure is what a flat-rate national hauler charges for that single item, read off their own published breakdown rather than estimated. The range spans the metros we measured (Mission Viejo, CA (Orange County) · Philadelphia, PA) — the gap is the trip fee, not a margin of error.
| Item | Category | One item, hauled |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | Mattresses & Beds | $89–$109 |
| Full | Mattresses & Beds | $94–$114 |
| Loveseat (2-seater) | Furniture | $94–$114 |
| Sofa (3-seater) | Furniture | $94–$114 |
| Washer or dryer * | Appliances | $94–$114 |
| Queen | Mattresses & Beds | $99–$119 |
| TV up to 42" * | Electronics | $99–$119 |
| King | Mattresses & Beds | $104–$124 |
| TV over 42" | Electronics | $114–$134 |
| Armchair or recliner | Furniture | $119–$139 |
| Fridge or freezer | Appliances | $124–$144 |
| Upright piano | Pianos & Heavy Items | $439–$459 |
| Hot Tub / Spa | $884–$904 |
* These two carry an assumption, and it is written out rather than hidden: Washer or dryer — Measured for a washer; a dryer is priced the same here until we measure one. TV up to 42" — Covers two measured tiers; the dearer one is shown.

How these numbers are built
Junk removal is not priced per item. It is priced as one trip plus the share of the truck each item takes up:
trip fee + sum of item truck-shares − volume discount
The trip fee is the part that changes by city: we measured $64 in one metro and $84 in another. The item shares do not change by city — a queen mattress takes up the same space everywhere.
That trip fee is why one item is the worst deal in junk removal: you pay for the whole trip either way. The volume discount needs both a dollar subtotal and an item count, so clearing several things at once is where the price per item collapses.
Why the flat rate is only half the story
A flat rate is one company's number. On one real job — Furniture Removal in Rockville, MD — 12 local pros quoted between $225 and $1,250 for identical work, priced from the same photos with no site visit. The median was $525, and a 12-quote spread is what a single "average price" hides.
That is a 5.6× spread on the same pile. The only way to land at the bottom of a range like that is to see more than one quote for your own job.
