Old carpet is deceptive. A room of it rolled up in Portland, OR looks like one manageable bundle and weighs far more than anyone expects — carpet plus underlay from a single bedroom often runs past 150 pounds.
It is also awkward: rolls do not bend, they do not fit in a car, and most collection services cap what they will take from a household by length and weight.

Carpet Removal in Portland: what actually moves the price
Detached houses make up 53% of the stock in Portland. For carpet removal that generally means kerbside or garage access, which is the version of the job local pros price lowest.
With renters in 47% of Portland homes, a lot of carpet removal here happens on a deadline. If yours does not, saying you are flexible on the day is worth more than any haggling.
The median Portland home dates to 1966. Housing of that vintage sets the practical limits on carpet removal — doorway widths, stair turns and whether there is a basement in the picture at all.

Carpet Removal in Portland: where the city stops and a hauler starts
The free route in Portland has hard edges, and they are the reason people end up paying: The service covers single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. Renters go through the landlord, who holds the account, and apartment residents ask the property manager. An $18 pickup fee for the trip plus a charge per item by category: $29 extra large (a king mattress with its box spring, a sectional couch), $21 large (a queen or full mattress, a three-cushion couch, a dresser), $14 medium (a twin mattress, a desk, a chair). Appliances, electronics and anything holding coolant have their own categories. The city publishes the rate sheet and a cost calculator.
Past those limits the city is not an option at all — not slower, not pricier, simply unavailable. That is the line a hauler exists for, and it is worth knowing exactly where it sits before you start carrying anything.
Collection in Portland is run by City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability. Below is what they will take, straight from their own rules — and where each route runs out.
Booked bulky pickup
Anything that will not fit in the garbage bin. The city does not run the truck — your own garbage company does, at rates the city sets. The service covers single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. Call your garbage company at least a week ahead for a price and a date; sending photos gets the closest quote. Under city rules the company has to collect within seven days of the request, and your pickup day may not be your normal collection day. Nothing goes to the curb before the scheduled day. If a lot has to go, the city suggests asking the company whether renting a container is cheaper. Mattresses, broken microwaves, vacuums and TVs are all recyclable but not through the blue bin — Metro's Find a Recycler tool lists the drop-off points.

Pulling it up versus hauling it away
These are two different prices. If the carpet is already up and rolled, you are paying for a pickup. If the crew has to lift it, pull the underlay, remove tack strips and clear the staples, that is labor on top — and it is worth paying for, because tack strips are the part that reliably draws blood.
Cut it into manageable rolls
If you are lifting it yourself, cut the carpet into strips about three feet wide and roll them tight, then tape them. A tight roll takes a third of the truck space of a loose one and a single person can carry it. Loose folded carpet is what turns a half load into a full one.

Carpet Removal in Portland — common questions
How much does carpet removal cost in Portland?
Most people pay $150–$400. That is a national range for carpet removal, not a quote — your real price comes from local pros bidding on your photos, and it moves with volume, stairs and how far the item has to travel to the truck.
Will they pull the carpet up, or does it have to be ready?
Most will do both, but the price differs so say which you want. Lifting includes underlay, tack strips and staples; a crew that leaves tack strips behind has not finished the job and your new flooring installer will charge you to do it properly.
Is carpet recyclable?
Some is — nylon carpet can be reprocessed where a facility exists, and a few states run collection programs. In much of the country the realistic answer is landfill, and a pro who says so plainly is being straight with you rather than selling a green story.
What about padding and tack strips?
They go in the same load. Underlay is bulky but light, tack strips are sharp and get bundled separately for safety. Neither should cost extra beyond the labor of lifting them.
How quickly can it be picked up?
It depends on how many pros cover your area. On our first jobs the first quote arrived within one to three days, and we email you the moment one comes in. Once you pick a pro you choose the date and time window; same-day or next-day pickup is possible when a crew has room on the truck.
What does JunkerClub charge me?
Nothing. Posting a job and collecting quotes is free, and you pay your pro directly when the work is done. The pro pays the platform a small fee only when they win the job — it never gets added to your price.
Do I have to carry it outside myself in Portland?
No — the crew does the lifting and loading, and that labour is most of what you are paying for. In Portland 53% of homes are detached, so most jobs are a driveway carry and the truck can usually get close to the door. The median home here was built around 1966; single-width staircases are common in that stock and lifts are rare. Say which floor it is on and whether there is a lift when you post the job; that is the part that moves the quote. Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
What makes a junk removal quote in Portland different from the national average?
Access and housing type, mostly. In Portland, 53% of homes are detached and the city runs at about 4,763 residents per square mile — most homes here have a driveway a truck can reach, which usually keeps a job at the simpler end. Renters occupy 47% of occupied homes here, which also shapes when the work happens. The prices on this site are national ranges; the number you actually pay comes from local pros bidding on your photos. Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
