What Portland collects, and what you do with the rest
Every city route below is capped. Read the last two columns first: they decide whether the city takes your load at all, or only part of it.

Booking a city pickup
Anything that will not fit in the garbage bin. The city does not run the truck — your own garbage company does, at rates the city sets.
- How many items
- The service covers single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. Renters go through the landlord, who holds the account, and apartment residents ask the property manager.
- How to book
- Call your garbage company at least a week ahead for a price and a date; sending photos gets the closest quote. Under city rules the company has to collect within seven days of the request, and your pickup day may not be your normal collection day. Nothing goes to the curb before the scheduled day.
- What it costs
- An $18 pickup fee for the trip plus a charge per item by category: $29 extra large (a king mattress with its box spring, a sectional couch), $21 large (a queen or full mattress, a three-cushion couch, a dresser), $14 medium (a twin mattress, a desk, a chair). Appliances, electronics and anything holding coolant have their own categories. The city publishes the rate sheet and a cost calculator.
- Good to know
- If a lot has to go, the city suggests asking the company whether renting a container is cheaper. Mattresses, broken microwaves, vacuums and TVs are all recyclable but not through the blue bin — Metro's Find a Recycler tool lists the drop-off points.

Or have someone take it
City routes are cheap but slow, and they all assume you can get the item to the curb yourself. If it is upstairs, if it is heavy, or if you need it gone this week, a local pro is the faster answer.

What people actually pay — measured, not estimated
And a flat rate is only one company's number. When we put one real job out to bid, 12 local pros priced the same pile from the same photos: $225 to $1,250, median $525. Nobody else publishes this, because nobody else runs the auction.
