Trying to get rid of an old mattress in Detroit, MI? You are not alone — mattresses are one of the hardest household items to dispose of properly.
Most municipal trash services will not take a mattress from the curb because of bulk rules, and leaving one out can bring a fine.

Mattress Disposal in Detroit: what actually moves the price
65% of homes in Detroit are detached, which takes stairs and lifts out of the mattress disposal conversation almost entirely. The question left is how much there is.
Detroit runs at about 4,654 people per square mile. Dense service areas mean more pros within range of your address, and more bids is the mechanism that brings a mattress disposal price down.
50% of occupied homes in Detroit are rented, and month-end is when that shows: mattress disposal bookings cluster around move-out weekends, so a midweek slot is usually the cheaper one.

Mattress Disposal in Detroit: where the city stops and a hauler starts
The free route in Detroit has hard edges, and they are the reason people end up paying: Up to 2 cubic yards a week, which the city describes as about the size of two stoves. Nothing at the curb may exceed 2 cubic yards or 1,000 pounds, and each single item, bag or bundle has to weigh less than 50 pounds.
Past those limits the city is not an option at all — not slower, not pricier, simply unavailable. That is the line a hauler exists for, and it is worth knowing exactly where it sits before you start carrying anything.
Collection in Detroit is run by Detroit Department of Public Works. Below is what they will take, straight from their own rules — and where each route runs out.
Is there a free state recycling program?
Not in Michigan. Four states — California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island — fund mattress recycling with a fee collected when a new mattress is sold, which makes drop-off free there. There is no equivalent here, so the city routes above are the free options.
Taking it yourself
The public drop-off is Southfield Yard, Davison Yard and the J. Fons Transfer Station. Free for up to 2 cubic yards or 1,000 pounds of material. Construction and renovation debris is the exception and only J. Fons takes it: $95 for the first 2,000 pounds, which is also the minimum, and a prorated rate above that. Southfield and Davison are open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April through October and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November through March. J. Fons takes bulk and yard waste Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday mornings.

Why mattress removal costs what it does
Landfill disposal fees keep climbing, and a mattress needs a truck plus at least one pair of hands. Prices still vary a lot between companies, which is exactly why comparing quotes is worth the five minutes.
What changes the price
Size matters — a king costs more to haul than a twin — and so does access. A mattress coming down three flights without an elevator takes longer than one waiting in the driveway.

Mattress Disposal in Detroit — common questions
How much does mattress disposal cost in Detroit?
Most people pay $95–$150. That is a national range for mattress disposal, not a quote — your real price comes from local pros bidding on your photos, and it moves with volume, stairs and how far the item has to travel to the truck.
Can I put a mattress out with the trash in Detroit?
Most municipal services will not take one from the curb under their bulk rules, and an abandoned mattress can bring a fine. Some cities run a paid bulk pickup you have to book weeks ahead; a scheduled removal is normally faster.
Does a king mattress cost more than a twin?
Yes. Size drives both truck space and how many people it takes to move it, so a king sits at the top of the range and a twin near the bottom. A box spring counts as a second item with most pros.
Are mattresses actually recycled?
Often, yes. Steel springs, foam and timber can all be separated and reused, and some states run dedicated mattress recycling programs. Pros take them to a recycler where one is within reach rather than straight to landfill.
How quickly can it be picked up?
It depends on how many pros cover your area. On our first jobs the first quote arrived within one to three days, and we email you the moment one comes in. Once you pick a pro you choose the date and time window; same-day or next-day pickup is possible when a crew has room on the truck.
What does JunkerClub charge me?
Nothing. Posting a job and collecting quotes is free, and you pay your pro directly when the work is done. The pro pays the platform a small fee only when they win the job — it never gets added to your price.
Do I have to carry it outside myself in Detroit?
No — the crew does the lifting and loading, and that labour is most of what you are paying for. In Detroit 65% of homes are detached, so most jobs are a driveway carry and the truck can usually get close to the door. The median home here dates to around 1947, and stairwells and doorways from those years tend to be narrower than a modern build — worth mentioning if the item is bulky. Say which floor it is on and whether there is a lift when you post the job; that is the part that moves the quote. Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
What makes a junk removal quote in Detroit different from the national average?
Access and housing type, mostly. In Detroit, 65% of homes are detached and the city runs at about 4,654 residents per square mile — nearly every address has its own driveway and garage, so volume matters far more than access. Renters occupy 50% of occupied homes here, which also shapes when the work happens. The prices on this site are national ranges; the number you actually pay comes from local pros bidding on your photos. Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
