What Virginia Beach collects, and what you do with the rest
Every city route below is capped. Read the last two columns first: they decide whether the city takes your load at all, or only part of it.
| Route | What it costs | How much it takes | The condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booked city collection | — | No item count is published. What the city does cap is the item itself: a rug up to 9 ft by 12 ft, rolled and tied, and fencing up to ten eight-foot sections. | Anything too large for the black trash cart that you cannot haul to the city landfill yourself. |
| Hire a hauler | You pay — quotes come from local companies bidding against each other. | No item cap and no wrapping, residency or vehicle rule. | They carry it out; nothing has to reach the curb under its own steam. |
Booking a city pickup
Anything too large for the black trash cart that you cannot haul to the city landfill yourself.
- How many items
- No item count is published. What the city does cap is the item itself: a rug up to 9 ft by 12 ft, rolled and tied, and fencing up to ten eight-foot sections.
- How to book
- Request it online — the city prefers that — or on 757-385-4650, by email to wastemgt@vbgov.com, or in person, at least three days before your regular weekly trash day. The city asks residents to gather several items into one request rather than booking a pickup per item.
- Good to know
- Items go out between 5 p.m. the day before and 7 a.m. on the collection day, with three feet of clearance on every side — clear of carts, yard waste, poles, mailboxes, cable boxes and parked cars — never on the street or sidewalk, and never under power lines or low branches. Anything small left behind after the truck is the resident's to clear. Beds have to be disassembled and waterbeds drained; refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners must be empty with the shelves and doors removed, and the request has to say whether the refrigerant was taken out; water heaters and lawnmowers drained; chain-link fence rolled and other fencing stacked, with no concrete attached. Not eligible at all: building and renovation material, concrete, cardboard boxes, carpet, wood pallets, cabinets, doors, sinks, toilets, glass, boats, hazardous waste, propane tanks, paint, rocks, dirt, bags, tires, vehicle parts, recreational vehicles and computer towers.
Or have someone take it
City routes are cheap but slow, and they all assume you can get the item to the curb yourself. If it is upstairs, if it is heavy, or if you need it gone this week, a local pro is the faster answer.

What people actually pay — measured, not estimated
And a flat rate is only one company's number. When we put one real job out to bid, 12 local pros priced the same pile from the same photos: $225 to $1,250, median $525. Nobody else publishes this, because nobody else runs the auction.
